Tony Stewart braved a track
which has claimed many victims in its short history
to take Pole Position for the Indy 200 at Walt Disney
World. Circulating the speedway in just 21.685s,
166.013 mphon his second lap Stewart qualified over
1mph faster than nearest rival Arie Luyendyk who travelled
at 164.964 mph.
This
qualifying result must make Stewart, whose pre-race testing
form excelled, one of the top favourites to win the event.
Earlier
on, in practice, driver number 4, Davy Jones, had a huge
accident when he found himself sideways on turn 3. The
car then slid on to the dirt inside the turn before
going sideways to hit the outside wall twice. The
wrecked car eventually came to a stop on the infield
grass and Davy Jones, suffering critical head
injuries, was taken by helicoptered to the Orland
Regional Medical Center.
Since
then Jones has regained conciousness and is talking but
his condition is still said by doctors to be serious.
